Species Appropriate Raw Diet

Think like a dog!

You are a dog wondering around the country side looking for food, what will you eat? You will hunt and kill just about any living critter, chicken, pheasant, rabbit, squirrel, chipmunk, turkey, mice, rats, quail and so on. You will as a dog, eat the whole animal. If you as a dog, are in a pack, you all will hunt and kill these animals and larger animals such as deer, elk, moose, goat, sheep, wild boar, and the occasional domestic pig or cow. With these larger animals the most prized parts are organs, kidney, liver, heart, pancreas, lungs etc. Then next is the flesh and last is some bone but not the legs, probably the ribs on the smaller animals such as deer, sheep and goat. Perhaps the necks on some but most of the eating of bone will come from fowl, rabbit and the smaller animals. It is important for a dog to have available raw meaty bones which can be ingested. They need the nutrients from the meaty bones especially young dogs/puppies. You should feed your dog something like whole chicken leg quarters at least twice a week to insure well developed structure and muscles.
One of the main reasons pet owners are reluctant to switch their dog to a raw diet is the fear their dog would not get enough vitamins and minerals.  Many others feed plant and vegetable matter for an added vitamin and mineral punch. But if you’re one of those raw feeders who’s tired of mincing veggies – or you worry that carnivorous dogs shouldn't be eating that many veggies – then here’s a guide to help you see the vitamin and mineral content in animal proteins.  Although it’s hard to improve on a fresh, natural diet of species appropriate foods, you may have a dog who you feel needs extra nutrition (perhaps extra vitamin C for immune function or iodine for thyroid function).   Luckily, there are nutritional herbs you can use to give your dog an additional boost without needing to mulch up those veggies.  Most importantly, these whole food sources of vitamins and minerals are a much healthier choice than their synthetic counterparts.  And unlike synthetic vitamins and minerals, herbs provide essential nutrients complete with the co-factors they need to make a healthy change in your dog – just as nature intended!
